Pace University’s PA
Program Gives Back to the New York Community
By: Suzie Sagues PA-S
Community service and
involvement seems to be the spirit of
Pace
University
’s physician assistant program. Between the months of December
2007 and January 2008 the program participated in three
different community service events. During the holiday season
the physician assistant students donated toys of all sorts to
New York City
’s Mount Sinai Children’s Hospital’s holiday gift drive.
The program estimated donating over 40 different toys to the
children’s hospital. Despite a rigorous final exam schedule
during the holiday season many of the students found great joy
in delivering the toys to the children in person.
The enthusiastic group of
students also volunteered as soon as they returned from winter
break at
New York City
’s St. Xavier soup kitchen. Many of the future physician
assistants described their volunteering at the soup kitchen as
an eye opening experience. It seemed important to the students
to realize the number of
New York City
residents that are without shelter or sources of nutritional
food everyday. Understanding these severities allowed the
students to gain an insight into the diversity of health issues
which could be introduced to these residents.
In addition to volunteering at
the soup kitchen in January Pace’s physician assistant
students also took on the challenge of promoting health
education on their own college campus. During campus hours the
future physician assistants set up an informational table in the
entrance way of
Pace
University
to promote education on blood pressure control. For hours the
physician assistant students took readings of their
colleagues’ blood pressures and spoke about the importance of
maintaining normal blood pressure levels. Educational literature
on blood pressure along with enticing candy treats were
distributed at the table by all the smiling future health care
providers.

Light the Night
The students and faculty of Pace University – Lenox Hill
Hospital’s Physician Assistant Program took it upon
themselves to celebrate this year’s National PA Week by
supporting The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
On October 4th after a long day in the classroom, the
soon to be physician assistants and faculty participated in
The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Light the Night
fundraising event. Light the Night is an annual walk which
begins at
New York City
’s South Seaport and continues onto the historic
Brooklyn
Bridge
. Walkers aim to raise money for The Leukemia and Lymphoma
Society before participating in the walk where they have the
opportunity to physically show their support towards the fight
against blood cancers.
All told the Pace Physician Assistant Class of 2009 was able
to raise and donate over $3,500 to The Leukemia and Lymphoma
Society. “Participating in the Light the Night was so
special for our PA Program. We were able to work together in
our fundraising efforts and the walk across the
Brooklyn
Bridge
made it fun and worthwhile!” said Pace PA student Eduardo
Yarur. This year New York City’s East River shined with hope
as each participant held an illuminated balloon while walking
across the Brooklyn Bridge. Supporting the health care
community in alternative ways seems to be a new passion for
these Pace University PA students.
The future physician assistants gladly agree that they
hope to increase their community involvement as they continue
to step forward in the health care system.
NYSSPA
Goes to Albany!
LOBBY DAY: March 12, 2007
New York State Physician Assistants visited
Albany on Monday, March 12, 2007, to participate in Lobby
Day. NYSSPA's legislative agenda was discussed with
leaders of the State, including Assemblywoman Gunther.

NYSSPA Leadership presents Assemblywoman Gunther
with an award
thanking her for her efforts on behalf of the citizens of New York.
The bill
which became law allows Physician Assistants to direct the drawing of
blood
for evidentiary use. This will help in the prosecution of drunk
drivers.

theme of the conference was, "Strengthening the knowledge
base for leadership." Multiple topics were covered
ranging from increasing membership involvement in the
organization to various reimbursement issues. With these new
ideas and perspectives your NYSSPA leadership will continue to
strive to insure that New York continues to be a PA friendly
work place.
